Out there, in the semi-wild, where man-made fades into half-lit forest – we found you! Or rather, you found us. We saw you soar. We heard you call. We heard the dogs of the warden’s house yap to ward you off from their master’s chickens. You never had a problem living with us, although we had a hard time living with you and your ilk. And Sparrowhawks, were you hiding there somewhere? Probably.
Although my children yearn to see Sea Eagles and Golden Eagles and want to explore the Highlands that hide them, for now Red Kites are still plenty amazing.

We have wedgetail eagles here – they soar over the fields in pairs, watching carefully for movement. Before we even realise they have arrived, our chickens have all gathered under the cherry and peach trees and squatted down, the ducks stand like statues wherever they happened to be when they realised what was coming, and the guinea fowl hide away in the corners of their a-frame. They know – it’s bred into them – what that shadow means. Last week, Julian heard a commotion outside, and there was a falcon on the centre beam of the a-frame, darting his beak in between the mesh trying to reach the guinea fowl – they were over 5 feet out of reach! – and when Julian clapped his hands and shouted, the falcon just looked up and straight at Julian, so brazen. Julian had to chase him off! Hope you get to the highlands soon and so glad to see such lovely signs of spring for you
