I still haven’t given my family their Christmas presents yet – we didn’t manage to make it up to pass them on, but hopefully soon, hopefully before Easter…
One thing we did manage to make, as I do this time of year, is a batch of lip balm. I hate buying the stuff in the shops when homemade is invariably easier, cheaper and better for us, and the babes always have some stuffed in their coat pockets for when we are out bird-watching, or whatever it is we do in cold weather…
So I made a couple extra for stocking stuffers and thought how easy this recipe is and why hadn’t I blogged it yet? So here it is – the recipe. Both easy and peasy, keeping it simple, the way I like it.
You Will Need ::
Something to put your balm in – small tins, an old washed out lip balm tube – or buy new off the web in batches like we do,
Oil, we use almond oil,
1 or 2 drops of essential oil, we use peppermint,
If you want colour then a little bit of old lipstick,
A double-boiler (an old baked bean tin in a saucepan of water does just as well),
Glass pippette droppers (if you want to use lip balm tubes instead of tins),
To Make ::
You can make as much or as little as you like so long as you keep to the ratio of 3 parts oil to 1 part beeswax pellet. This is a general rule to make it lip balm consistency. If you want it runnier, add more oil. Harder, add more beeswax. For a small batch of three or four tins we used :: 1 tablespoon beeswax pellets, 3 tablespoons oil.
Add all your ingredients into the tin and place the tin into a pan of boiling water. As the beeswax melts take a small whisk or fork and beat the ingredients together.
Once the ingredients are mixed then either pour into your tins or use the pippette to drop the mixture into the tubes.
Leave to cool. If the mixture is not the right consistency, then dig it out and reboil it in your double boiler tin adding either more oil or beeswax to how you would like it.
That’s it. Really very easy, cheap and satisfyingly healthy! There are many recipes on the net for fancy lip balms should you get a mad glint in your eye and want to make even more, but this basic recipe will do your family just fine.
